The Art of the Start: 6 Ways Graduates Can Take Back Control Of Their Health
When you’re coming out of the university and entering the career world, it is said that it’s a whole new world: “the real world”.
Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not. But there are some changes that you have to go through if you’re going to get yourself a good 9 to 5 job.
You have to wake up early, get ready and be presentable, whilst ensuring you have left yourself enough time to go from home to work and be on time.
There’s the responsibility of getting your work done, managing people on your team and presenting ideas in regular meetings.
Whilst getting to grips with this change and learning new responsibilites, most graduates tend to forget about one important area of their life: health.
Perhaps the funny thing is that health is the most important, the first area of their life they should get sorted before jumping into work and career. If you’re body isn’t functioning well, you’re mind won’t. And if both don’t, it’ll definitely show in your results.
Here are seven ways graduates can take back control of their health and get on the path to wellness:
1. Eat a healthy breakfast when you get up in the morning. If there’s no time to prepare something, wake up earlier. It’s worth the extra time. What constitutes a healthy breakfast? (link)
2. Walk or cycle to work if possible. Most graduates have to devote their life to work for at least a few years, therefore throwing out the question of “when do you exercise?” Ask a bunch of graduates when they exercise and the majority answer will be, “I don’t!”. If work is in good distance from your home, walk or cycle. If not, drive, but take a walk during lunch.
3. Pack a good home-made lunch. When it’s your lunch break, don’t go out and get a Big Mac, a pizza or your local pub lunch. Grab a salad. Better yet, make it at home tuned to your taste and with all the right ingridients. Have some pasta, perhaps. You’ll also save money making it at home. (Timewise: you could do this the night before if you can’t in the morning)
4. Take good care of your posture both when standing, walking and sitting. Don’t slouch and don’t stare at the screen too much. Good posture and working habits are cruical to your health.
5. Take vitamin supplements (link) daily. It’s more and more common that a busy graduate will eat out quite a bit during the week. The problem with fast-food, processed foods is that it’s lost most of it’s vitamins and minerals. But all is well if you can get into the habit of taking some natural vitamins and minerals in the form of supplements so that you get all your body’s requirements daily.
6. Drink water. If you’re office hasn’t got a cooler, suggest to the boss to get one. In any case, carry your own water bottle and fill up regularly – that means, you’ve got to drink up regularly throughout the day.
That’s 6 easy ways to get started – once you’ve done that, then take a look at other things and organise your diet for complete rejuvenation.
