About a month ago, I wrote about what the WHO termed ‘globesity’ and how USA is now second to the UK in the inability to get off junk food. We all know the negative effects of junk food on our health and lifestyle but quitting it is always a totally different story – and it’s not exactly a question of using willpower otherwise more people would have quit already.

Here are five ways to quit eating junk food:

1. Always have your reason. Tony Robbins said that when you have enough reasons for something you want to do, you’ll be able to do anything you want. What are your reasons for quitting junk food: losing weight? becoming healthy? lower cholesterol? Be clear on your reasons and write them down.

2. Quitting doesn’t happen overnight. So plan well. Cut down slowly over time. For example, if you eat junk food more than once a week, cut down to once a week. Then cut down to twice a month. Then to once a month, then cut it out totally. Create whatever plan is good for you and include your groceries, shopping and cooking.

3. Play some fun sports. Playing sports, as well as being good for your body, makes you feel good about yourself. You also get into the habit of wanting to keep up the good health and naturally motivate yourself to stay off the junk food.

4. Enjoy eating. Food is to be eaten and enjoyed. I don’t like the look of commercial and unhealthy junk food. If I were to eat it, I wouldn’t enjoy it. I’ve gone of it totally.  Take time to prepare a tasty healthy meal and enjoy eating it knowing what goodness you’re providing to you body and life.

5. Control. The article I wrote a while back showed that people can’t control their ability to eat junk food. In fact, you could put it this way: The junk food controls their health, rather than their health controlling the junk food. Don’t let it get to that. Control your food and think. Why did you quit in the first place? What is more important to you – eating junk food or achieving your goal?

Number 4 is an important one.
In the beginning I didn’t like healthy food compared to unhealthy ones.. But in time I got more used to it and now I can enjoy a 100% health dish as much as the burger on that picture.

If you don’t start eating junk, you don’t have to wean yourself from it. #4 came naturally to me. I grew up in a household where from-scratch food was the only thing my mother ever prepared. I could never stand the KentuckyFriedTacoBellMcWendyBurgerKingPizzaHut swill.

I was in an akward position many years ago of working for a PR agency with the local McDonald’s account. When I had to go to one of the “restaurants” for some promotion, I always make up an excuse not to accept the owner/operator’s kind offer of “anything” I wanted. I’d have a soda and claim it was my third restaurant stop that day, that I was on a diet, that I had to go straight to a doctor’s appointment and couldn’t eat because of a blood test, etc. I figured lying was more diplomatic than gagging.

Wow, I didn’t know that the U.K. was having more difficulties with fast food (or take away) than the U.S.! Maybe that’s the reason that the BBC America show “You Are What You Eat” is on (love that show).

From my own experience, I feel 200% better by eating a diet filled with whole foods instead of the fast foods and processed foods. Whole, real food really does a body good. ;)

Junk foods are really bad. People are used to eating those foods because it’s widely promoted and available almost anywhere.
